Our History

Since 2019, Sheri Levin McNerthney and Ellyn Mortimer have shared a vision of expanding Jewish life on Maui; honoring the vibrant communities that already exist, while creating space for those who hadn’t yet found their place. Inspired by the idea of the “70 faces of the Torah,” we set out not to represent every perspective, but to add new ones to the island’s Jewish landscape rooted in inclusivity, curiosity, and a deep sense of belonging.  Marge Bonar joined the journey, bringing both her passion and an unexpected gift: an inactive 501(c)(3) nonprofit that could be reimagined with new life and purpose. What had started as a shared dream began to take on real shape.

In 2022, alongside Rabbi Sandra Razieli, we officially launched Maui Jewish Ohana with a simple but meaningful gathering: a Tu B’Shevat celebration in a home, where people came together to share food, stories, and planted the seeds for what this community could become. The response was immediate and deeply affirming—there was a clear desire for connection, for a Jewish space that felt open, welcoming, and reflective of a wider range of experiences. What began as a small circle quickly grew, strengthened by the energy and commitment of community members like Julie Dorkin and her family, who helped expand our programming and deepen our reach.

Through intimate gatherings, vibrant holiday celebrations, and meaningful shared experiences, Maui Jewish Ohana has become exactly what we hoped to build: a warm, evolving community grounded in belonging. We continue to grow with intention—creating space for new voices, new traditions, and new connections—while staying rooted in the belief that Jewish life on Maui is enriched when more faces, perspectives, and stories are welcomed in.

Rabbi Hanniel Levenson brings a holistic approach to spirituality rooted in the belief that the world is our sanctuary. Born in Haifa and raised in New York City, Hanniel is a rabbi, multimedia artist, surfer, and yoga teacher whose life and practice are shaped by a deep relationship with the natural world.

Hanniel holds a B.A. in Religion and Art from New York University, a Master of Science in Environmental Policy from Bard College, and Rabbinical Ordination from The Academy for Jewish Religion. Art, ecology, and Jewish learning are integral to Hanniel's work and way of being.

Nature is a grounding and sacred space, where Hanniel slows down, listens more carefully, and connects to the greater whole. This sensibility flows directly into a vision of Judaism as an earth-based tradition, connected to the seasons and our relationship with the land, one that breathes both structure and spontaneity into spiritual life. Through a renewed ritual architecture, Hanniel seeks to celebrate life with an expansive understanding of Judaism and the world's wisdom traditions.

Hanniel arrives at the Maui Jewish 'Ohana with openness, ready to listen, to learn, and to build relationships over time. Community, in this vision, grows organically and honestly, through showing up, being present, and genuine care. Hanniel seeks to create spaces that feel nourishing and welcoming, where everyone feels part of the conversation.
